Various Styles of Lipless Crankbait for Bass Fishing
Many crankbaits have a diving lip that provides buoyancy to the lures. However, a lipless crankbait has no diving lip, so it can sink to and be fished at varying depths due to a lack of natural buoyancy.
Lipless crank is very versatile and can be fished in a large number of situations. This is in part due to the many techniques that can be fished for these lures but also due to their characteristics and the various colors that can be matched to most bait, whether perch, shad or crawfish.
Fishing with Lipless Crankbait in Various Locations and Depths
Lipless crank baits are most often used when fishing around underwater vegetation, such as grass, where fish can often be found. They can be retrieved either over or around the edges of the vegetation and can also be ripped straight through it, so they’re great for coaxing out the fish that are hiding there.
Using lipless crankbait for bass or other species means they can be fished in any depth of water because the absence of a lip allows them to be dropped vertically to the required level. The technique you use may vary by season and what you want to catch. You’ll often use a slow-rolling presentation for pre-spawn bass but can rip the lure over, around or through the vegetation when aquatic grasses are abundant in summer. A long-distance cast and fast retrieve can be productive in the fall while a lift-fall retrieve may work better as the water gets colder.
For deep fish, let the lure sink to the required depth before using a straight retrieve to keep the lure in the strike zone for as long as possible. You may also move the lure up and down from the bottom or through the water column for great results.
Using a straight retrieve, a lipless crankbait will tend to wobble in the water and will create greater vibration if it’s retrieved more quickly. Some crankbaits have a metal weight inside that’s loose so it rattles to create a noise that will attract prey fish.
