Best Results from Fishing Lures for Rockfish
Pacific Coast rockfish, also known as rock cod or Pacific snapper, tend to be quite easy to catch and so are ideal for those anglers who are just getting started in fishing. They come in a lot of varieties and while they taste slightly different from each other, they are all equally delicious, whether deep-fried, steamed, grilled or baked. They have a light and delicate taste that’s not overly fishy and the firm, lean, mild-flavored flesh is ideal for making the classic French dish, bouillabaisse. Read More
Get the Best Rockfish Lures for Different Conditions
Fishing for Pacific rockfish is usually simple, requiring gear that’s not overly complex. This includes lures for rockfish that are tied directly to the end of the line and don’t require weights, floats or swivels.
Pacific rockfish are normally caught by dropping your line directly to the bottom and waiting for a fish to bite. If they’re below one hundred feet, their air bladders will expand on the way up and they won’t be able to fight at all. If you want something a little sportier, use lighter gear to fish at a higher depth and in less current, so you attract smaller fish that will put up more of a fight.
If tackle fishing in deep water, you want heavier gear with plenty of weight and a conventional saltwater reel. Shallower water requires only a light bait-casting or spinning reel. Short and basic rods are often fine for deep fishing.
As for lures, metal jigs are often very effective and will usually catch bigger fish since they drop straight down, even in a heavy current. A diamond jig with little action is usually adequate for shallower water while plastic lures such as scampi tails will also work very well. Pacific rockfish aren’t very choosy so many lures will work well but you can also add bait, such as a strip of squid, to the lure to make it more attractive. If you get it right, the rockfish will bite, and you’ll be assured of a good catch.
The Best Pacific Rockfish Lures to Meet Your Needs
Many lures work effectively for the Pacific rockfish and the main aim is to get it to the bottom, or whatever depth you choose for different sizes of fish, as quickly as possible and then keep it there. This applies especially when you’re operating from a drifting boat. You can jig the line up and down slowly, pausing frequently, for maximum effect.
