DTX HD vs. DTX LRS: The Most Significant Evolution in the History of the DTX Minnow
In the relentless pursuit to create the world’s #1 offshore trolling lure, the iconic DTX Minnow has evolved through years of innovation, countless prototypes, and extreme real-world testing. The original DTX LRS series set a global benchmark for high-speed trolling performance, but the all-new DTX Heavy Duty (HD) series represents the most substantial upgrade in the lure’s history.
This isn’t a small refinement. This is a complete reengineering for anglers who push their gear (and their lures) beyond the limits.

What “Heavy Duty” Really Means And How It Surpasses the LRS
The old LRS DTX was already trusted worldwide, built around Nomad’s Gorilla Throughwire system and proven ABS body. But as anglers targeted bigger tuna, wahoo, and dogtooth with heavier drag and higher speeds, Nomad saw the limits of traditional construction. The DTX HD was built to eliminate those limits.
1. Stronger Materials & Structure (Major Upgrade from LRS)
Old DTX LRS - Gorilla Throughwire offered solid strength, but under extreme load the body could flex. Standard ABS construction provided durability, but not engineered for modern high-speed trolling.
New DTX HD - Constructed from premium Japanese Heavy Duty ABS, selected specifically for increased density and impact resistance. Features Nomad’s proprietary Diamond Armour internal structure, offering far greater crush and pressure resistance than the LRS could achieve.
Thicker internal walls and improved ultrasonic welds deliver structural rigidity the LRS never had. At the heart of the upgrade is the revolutionary Metal Matrix Plate System, a stainless-steel skeleton molded into the lure’s body. Unlike the LRS, which relied on wiring, the HD’s plate system becomes part of the lure itself. Precision holes allow plastic to flow around the metal during molding, locking it permanently into place.
The result: A lure with almost zero flex, massively increased strength, and load resistance light-years ahead of the LRS.
2. Fully Connected for Maximum Pulling Power
The DTX HD is engineered to remain fully connected from tow point to tail, something the LRS could not achieve due to its wire-based internal structure.
This creates:
- Better distribution of fight load
- Increased body integrity under heavy drag
- A lure that keeps its shape and action even after countless big-fish strikes
- Where the LRS did well, the HD dominates.

3. Faster & Truer: Hydrodynamics + Autotune Redefined
The original DTX LRS introduced the world to Nomad’s Autotune technology, giving anglers unmatched straight-running performance. But as trolling speeds increased, so did the need for tighter tolerances.
Old LRS - Excellent stability, but blowout occurred at extreme speeds. Autotune performed well but was not optimized for high-drag, high-pressure trolling.
New DTX HD - Features an upgraded Autotune system with a solid ring tow point, providing stronger, more stable alignment. Improved precision of the Autotune mechanism ensures dead-straight running at higher speeds than the LRS could handle.
The HD’s Hydro Speed eyelet design allows extreme trolling speeds without sacrificing action or balance. Even after hard strikes or repeated fish, the HD maintains its perfect running posture.
4. Proven Beyond Limits: Pressure Tested to 300m/1000ft
The LRS series was built to be tough, but the HD was engineered to withstand forces far beyond real fishing scenarios. To validate this, Nomad invested in a Depth Simulator Pressure Machine, a world first in lure testing.
DTX HD Durability Results
- Survives 400+ PSI (300m / 1000ft) for one continuous minute without deformation
- Maintains structural integrity far beyond the LRS capacity
- Sets a new global standard for trolling lure durability
This is not just stronger. It’s scientifically verified, engineered toughness.
Innovation Beyond the LRS Era
The DTX HD is the culmination of everything Nomad has learned from decades of offshore fishing, lure design, and big-fish punishment. While the LRS paved the way with revolutionary features, the HD series represents the next generation, built for anglers who fish harder, troll faster, and demand more from their gear. In short:
DTX LRS was a category leader.
DTX HD is a category redefiner.
Born from relentless testing, cutting-edge materials, and a commitment to absolute performance, the DTX Minnow Heavy Duty stands as the toughest, strongest, and most reliable trolling lure Nomad has ever created.
