Striped Bass Fishing With Nomad Design Lures

Striped Bass Fishing With Nomad Design Lures

From Surf to Offshore: Mastering the Striper Hunt

Striped Bass, or “Stripers,” are one of America’s most iconic and unpredictable game fish. True nomads, they thrive in saltwater, brackish bays, and even freshwater rivers and lakes. From the rocky coasts of Maine to the Sacramento Delta and the Chesapeake Bay, Stripers are constantly on the move, adapting to changing conditions and chasing bait wherever it goes.

What makes Striped Bass so compelling is their versatility. One day they may be keyed in on sand eels offshore, the next they’re crashing bunker schools on the surface or feeding on worms in shallow estuaries. They’ll eat a wide range of prey, but success comes from understanding what they’re feeding on and how they’re feeding at that moment.

Each season begins with the spring spawn, as warming water draws fish into freshwater systems like the Hudson and Delaware Rivers. After spawning, they disperse, some staying in rivers, others pushing back toward coastal waters. Through summer, large schools migrate north into cooler New England waters, feeding aggressively before beginning their fall run south.

To consistently catch Stripers, anglers need to match their lure choice and presentation to both the bait and the fish’s behavior. That’s where Nomad Design’s lineup stands out, built from real on-water experience and designed to cover every scenario.

SWIMMING PLUGS

Swimming plugs are your go-to when fish are actively feeding but not breaking the surface. These lures imitate larger baitfish like mullet or bunker and are ideal for covering water in bays, estuaries, and along open beaches.

The Shikari is a true all-rounder. Its tungsten weight transfer system helps you cast long distances, critical when fish are feeding just out of range, and its steady swimming action makes it effective with a simple, consistent retrieve.

The Maverick offers something different. Thanks to Nomad’s Patented Auto Tune™ System, it produces a tighter, more erratic wobble. This makes it especially effective in pressured waters or when fish are hesitant, as it adds a subtle unpredictability that can trigger reaction strikes. Fish it with a slow to medium retrieve, occasionally pausing to let it change cadence.

TOPWATER LURES

When Stripers are feeding on the surface, few techniques are as effective or as exciting as topwater fishing. This is most common when bait like bunker or herring is pushed to the surface.

The Chug Norris is designed to create maximum disturbance. Use a sharp, rhythmic rod tip action to produce loud pops and splashes that call fish in from a distance. It’s ideal in low light, choppy water, or whenever you need to grab attention.

The Riptide stickbait is built for covering water and drawing fish up from below. Its streamlined profile and easy-casting design make it perfect for long casts into breaking fish or working expansive flats. Fish it with a steady retrieve or a sweep-and-pause technique to create a skipping, fleeing baitfish action that often triggers explosive strikes.

For a more subtle but highly effective approach, the Madscad excels when fish are keyed in on fleeing bait. Available in sinking and suspending models, its erratic, darting action mimics a panicked baitfish skipping across the surface. Fish it with a steady retrieve combined with short rod twitches to make it slash and change direction unpredictably, this is often what triggers aggressive strikes from following fish.

When fishing topwater for Stripers, especially larger fish, remember the classic rule: “bow to the cow.” When a fish strikes, resist the urge to set the hook immediately. Instead, drop the rod tip slightly and let the fish turn before coming tight.

 TROLLING LURES

When Stripers move deeper or spread out, trolling becomes one of the most efficient ways to locate and catch fish. It allows you to cover large areas and maintain your lure at a consistent depth.

The DTX Inshore range is built for this exact purpose. These lures are engineered to track straight and stay balanced across a variety of trolling speeds, making them ideal for working channels, ledges, and open water. Match your trolling speed to the activity level of the fish, slower for lethargic fish, faster when they’re actively feeding.

For a more aggressive, high-speed option, the Madmacs 130s comes into play. While famous for speed, the smaller sizes are extremely effective for Stripers, especially when fish are chasing fast-moving bait like mackerel or small bunker. Run them at higher trolling speeds to cover water quickly and trigger reaction bites from fish that might ignore slower presentations.

To get the most out of trolling, focus on your depth control and spread. Use your electronics to locate bait and fish, then adjust lure size, diving depth, and speed until you dial in the pattern. Once you find what’s working, consistency is key.

LIVE OPS SOFT PLASTICS

When Stripers get pressured or lock in on smaller, more subtle bait, soft plastics can be one of the most effective ways to get bites. Their natural feel and lifelike movement make them ideal for slower presentations and finicky fish.

The Live Ops Dozer Minnow is designed to perfectly mimic baitfish like sand eels, anchovies, and juvenile bunker. Its soft, durable body and realistic profile allow it to move naturally in the water, even at slow speeds, key when fish are hesitant or feeding close to the bottom.

Fish the Dozer Minnow on a jighead and adapt your retrieve to the conditions. In deeper water, use a lift-and-fall technique to imitate a wounded baitfish. Around structure, a slow, steady retrieve just off the bottom can be incredibly effective. When fish are suspended or chasing bait, a slightly faster retrieve with subtle twitches helps trigger reaction strikes.

Soft plastics really shine in tough conditions, clear water, heavy fishing pressure, or when Stripers are feeding selectively. Downsizing your presentation with the Dozer Minnow can often be the difference between a slow day and a hot bite.

JIGGING & VIBING

When Stripers are holding deep or feeding on slender bait like sand eels or herring, vertical techniques like jigging and vibing are often the most effective.

The Squidtrex is a standout when fish are keyed in on squid or larger profile bait. Its unique design combines the presence of a jig with the vibration of a blade, making it incredibly effective at drawing strikes. Fish it vertically by dropping it to the bottom and using a slow lift-and-fall retrieve, or work it with short hops to keep it in the strike zone longer. It’s especially deadly around structure or when fish are holding tight and need extra stimulation to commit.

The Vertrex Max vibe adds another dimension. Its vibrating action makes it highly effective both on the drop and during a steady retrieve. It’s particularly useful when fish are holding tight to structure or when you need to trigger bites from less aggressive fish. Fish it vertically or cast it out and work it back with a lift-and-wind retrieve.
